Can I use my own domain name with Email Hosting? |
| |
Yes,
we allow you to receive and send email from your own
domain names. You have two options for configuring your
domain name.
#
You can have us host the DNS for the domain name and
direct your registrar to our DNS servers. We provide
a DNS management interface for you to configure your
domain name.
#
You can direct your MX record on your domain name to
our servers. |

then
you most likely have the wrong settings in your email

Someone
is sending viruses or spam that appears to come "from"
an address at my domain. |
| |
This
type of abuse happens frequently to many domain name
owners, since spammers rarely use their own domain names
in SPAM and viruses select addresses randomly from other
people's address books.
Sometimes
spammers just make up return addresses to put in their
spam and it is a coincidence that this time they chose
one that happens to belong to you. Sending an email
that appears to have come FROM someone who did not send
it is known as "forging email".
Anyone
with Outlook or any other email program can forge whatever
address they want in the FROM field of an email, regardless
of whether they own the domain name in the address,
regardless of whether they have permission to use it,
and regardless of whether the domain name even exists
or is valid. There is nothing that the rightful owner
of a domain name can do to stop people from sending
out email with an address in the FROM field using someone
else's domain name.
There
also is nothing that a webhost can do to stop or prevent
spammers or virus mails from wrongfully claiming that
your email address came FROM or was
the sender of a piece of spam or email virus.
The
most you can probably do about this is to go to Spamcop
and report SPAM and just delete virus
mails and the bounce messages that may be coming to
you as the purported sender.
The
most annoying part of having someone forge your email
address in the FROM field of their
outgoing SPAM is that nondelivery and
other bounce notifications will be returned to you because
the undeliverable messages appear to come FROM
your address.
There
are a couple of ways to avoid receiving those. If the
username part (left of the @ symbol) of the forged FROM
address is not a mailbox that you set up in your Control
Panel, then you are receiving the unwanted messages
through your catch-all forwarding rule (The catch-all
rule allows you to receive mail addressed to any address
@yourdomain). To stop receiving these messages,
you could delete your catch-all rule so that you will
no longer receive mail addressed to non-existent addresses
at @yourdomain. Or, if you want to
keep your catch-all rule, but just want to disable incoming
email for one particular address, you can create a new
forwarding rule in your Control Panel for the unwanted
address and set it to forward to
This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
If
the forged email address is one that is important to
you, that you need to receive email at, there is nothing
that can be done short of using your Spam Filter in
your Control Panel to blacklist the FROM addresses
in the undeliverable notices, such as: postmaster@*
and then setting the Spam Filter to either delete spam
automatically or automatically move it into another
folder. However, this is not recommended because messages
FROM those type of addresses are often
important and most of the time you will want to receive
them. |
 |
What
is a "catchall" account? |
| |
A
"catchall" account is an
account that will catch any e-mail that's sent to a
non-existing account under your domain. Instead of bouncing
the e-mail back to the sender, it'll store the e-mail
into the account that's assigned as the "catchall"
account.
Only
one user of your domain can have the "catchall"
account assigned to them.
Warning:
Catchall account is a big problem since it
picks up lot of spam. It is better to keep catchall
account disabled. |
 |
How
does the mail server filter spam and viruses? |
| |
Xcluzive
provides several layers of email filtering to reduce
the amount of unwanted email delivered to your mailboxes
on the shared system.
1.
The source of the incoming email is compared to spam
blacklists, including the Spamcop Blocklist, a dynamically
refreshing database of IP addresses from which numerous
spam messages have recently been reported. In the event
of a match, the email is temporarily deferred for later
attempted delivery. Depending on the sender's ISP's
server configuration, re-delivery is attempted for 1-4
days. If the source of the email is no longer present
in the spam blacklists upon any later delivery attempt,
the email makes it to subsequent checks (described below).
There currently is no way on the shared system to opt-out
of this filtering.
2.
The destination address is checked, and if it's not
valid (and you don't have a catch-all address configured
in the control panel), the email is returned to the
sender with an 'Unknown user' error message.
3.
As an emergency countermeasure against emerging worm
and malware threats, we will occasionally at this point
in the delivery process reject attachments with certain
filenames. Legitimate senders will receive a bounce
message explaining the non-delivery in these cases.
4.
Attachments are next checked for dangerous content,
including attachments with file extensions such as .reg,
.chm, .cnf, .ins, .jse, .lnk, .pif, .scf, .sct, .shb,
.vbs, .xnk, .com, .exe, .scr, .bat, .cmd, .cpl, .mhtml,
as well as any attachment with a very long filename,
and filenames with many spaces. Any matches are silently
quarantined. There currently is no way on the shared
system to opt-out of this filtering.
5.
Next, our virus signature database is consulted, and
any infected emails are discarded. There currently is
no way on the shared system to opt-out of this filtering.
In
no case, except as specifically noted above, are senders
notified of an email being discarded. This is because
most email generated by viruses provides a fake 'From'
address, and notifying these innocent users would needlessly
cause alarm and confusion. |
 |
Do
you purge messages from Trash and Spam folders? |
| |
Yes.
Our policy is to automatically delete messages in your
"Trash" or "Spam"
folders that are more than 15 days old. Removing
these messages will help you avoid wasting storage space
on unwanted data, but still provide ample opportunity
to review and relocate any accidentally or erroneously
filed messages.
Automatic
removal only operates "Trash" (Deleted
Items) and "Spam" (Junk).
You can still use your main Inbox and any other folders
to store messages as long as you like.
If
you are using POP3 style access, you
download your mail into your Local Folders inside a
mail program like Outlook. Since those Local Folders
are stored on your computer and not on our servers,
those emails on your own computer are not affected by
our automatic purges. |
 |
How
can I administer my account? |
| |
Administering
your Email accounts has never been easier with our comprehensive,
web-based control panel. Our administration area allows
you to configure every aspect of your Email account.
Some of the features of control panel include Adding
users, changing user’s passwords, creating forwarders,
creating aliases, allocation and viewing of disk quotas,
ticketing support, billing administration and much more. |
 |
How
does xcluzive handle Spam? |
| |
Spam
is not only a nuisance, but it is also a counter productive
entity that can drain the production of your employees
and make Email Communications nearly unbearable. At
Xcluzive we have several techniques in place that virtually
put an end to spam some of these techniques include
Challenge Response technology and Bayesian spam filtering. |
 |
How
Does xcluzive handle Viruses? |
| |
All
messages sent and received via e-mail are scanned and
monitored by the xcluzive's Virus Engine, in real time,
for spam mail and viruses before ever reaching the Email
Network preventing any damage to the data contained
in your Email Message or our systems. The xcluzive Anti
Virus Engine scans various compressed file formats including
ZIP, ARJ (JAR), LZH (LHA), RAR, and ACE. |
 |
How
is my data secure? |
| |
We
implement firewalls at all servers within our network
to only allow specific data to travel securely to your
computer. Servers are located in world-class datacenters,
known for their extreme physical security. |
 |
Will
my e-mails be bounced back to the sender if I exceed
my monthly disk usage limit? |
| |
Yes,
the emails will bounce. Although, we will notify you
about the over usage at 80% and you will have 2 options
to choose from:
1)
Upgrade to a higher plan to allow for the extra disk
space used.
2)
Delete emails so that the disk space used falls under
the limit allowed for the plan. |
 |
|
| |
We
never sell your information so they did not get your
email address from us. Spammers use robots to harvest
email addresses from your web pages. So if you have
posted on a newsgroup, bulletin board, or signed a guestbook,
they could have found you that way. They also search
domain name registration (WHOIS) records,
harvesting the email addresses of Administrative, Technical
and Billing contacts for domains so they could have
found your email address that way too. Often they just
guess at email addresses too.
Once
they have your email address, they'll most likely put
your address along with thousands of others in the "Bcc"
field of a mail. They also usually use a fake "From"
address in those fields. If the fake address they use
for that purpose happens to belong to someone, it usually
results in a denial of service attack against the innocent
person listed there, as tons of complaints and bounced
mails begin flooding in to him or her.
Spammers
are hard to stop. If you filter one mail relay where
it is coming from, they just pick up and move to another.
If you filter key words in their spams, they change
them. If you are too aggressive trying to keep out spam,
you may end up disabling yourself from receiving legitimate
mail. This problem not only affects you, but us and
everyone else using the internet.
What
Can You Do to Stop SPAM
1. Avoid posting your real email address on websites,
newsgroups, etc. If you do post publicly and want people
to be able to contact you by email, you can post your
email as myself
This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
and
then include a note in your post to "take out the
ABC to email me."
2.
Be careful about who you give your email address to
and what you signup for with your email address. Giving
your email address to the wrong website or company could
result in it being sold in bulk to spammers.
3.
Provide you very effective SPAM Control
Filters with Web and Email Hosting solutions, this will
stop upto 96% of SPAM but it can never be reached 100%.
4.
If you receive some SPAM you can feed
it to Spamcop which will tell you where it really came
from and notify the admins there that they are being
used to relay spam. |
 |
Is
there a way I can bounce all email addressed to unknown
users? |
| |
Yes,
you can do this by turning off the "catch-all"
rule found in your mailbox settings:
Log
into the Mailboxes & addresses section of OnSite.
Below the list of email addresses, find the 'No catch-all'
button. Mark that button and then click submit.
All
mail sent to an address that does not have an explicit
delivery rule will now be returned to sender.
This
is a good way to avoid spam. |
 |
|
| |
SMTP
(Simple Mail Transfer Protocol), SMTP is a
protocol for sending e-mail messages between servers.
Most e-mail systems that send mail over the Internet
use SMTP to send messages from one
server to another; the messages can then be retrieved
with an e-mail client using either POP3 or IMAP.
We
currently only offer an SMTP (Outgoing mail)
server to users of our Web Hosting and Email Hosting
customers. The details of our SMTP server and other
configuration options can be found in your control panel. |
 |
What
is SMTP Authentication? |
| |
Authenticated
SMTP allows you to send emails through our mail servers,
using a username and password supplied by us. This can
be used when your ISP (Internet Service Provider) does
not provide an outgoing mail server, or if you use a
machine which logs in from various locations, such as
a laptop.
You
should check with your ISP whether they block default
port 25 (SMTP) access through their network or allow
access to external SMTP servers through their network.
If
they block port 25, or prevent external access, this
service will not be available to you. |
 |
What
is the attachment size limit? |
| |
The
attachment size limit for the Mail System is 15MB. |
 |
What
is POP3? |
| |
Post
Office Protocol is a standard protocol for receiving
e-mail. POP is a client/server protocol in which e-mail
is received and held for you by our Mail server. Periodically,
you (or your client e-mail receiver) check your mail-box
on the server and download any email using POP3. |
 |
Which
e-mail protocol should I use, POP or IMAP? |
| |
Xcluzive
allows users to access their email using either the
POP (POP3) or the IMAP protocols. Most modern email
clients (Outlook, Entourage, Thunderbird) support both
of these protocols. This article will cover the advantages
and disadvantages of both.
We
advise that you do not use both IMAP and POP to access
a mailbox. If a mailbox is accessed at the same time
via the two protocols, it may cause unexpected/undesirable
results.
POP
(POP3)
The
advantages:
*
POP is somewhat simpler to manage. If you see a message,
it is on your computer.
* You can view all of your messages even if you are
not connected to the internet.
* More software supports the POP protocol.
The disadvantages:
*
If you download a message it is only available on that
computer.
* You cannot access your account if someone else is
accessing it at the same time.
POP is often best if you are only going
to view the messages from a single computer and your
Internet connection is not always available.
IMAP
The
advantages:
*
Messages reside on the mail server. Therefore:
o You can view these messages from any computer with
your web browser.
o We create archival backups of these messages daily.
* You can move messages from one IMAP account to another
IMAP account, or from the mail server to your personal
computer.
The disadvantages:
*
Unless you move messages to your local computer, you
can only view your messages while connected to the internet.
* Storing messages on the server will use some of your
hosting disk space. |

Spammers
commonly forge the headers of messages they send, making
it appear as though they originated elsewhere. This
is called "spoofing". Spammers
harvest vast numbers of email addresses, or even guess
common email addresses, and then put these addresses
in the "To:" and the "From:"
fields of the millions of email messages they send out.
Some of the messages they send will end up bouncing,
and when they do, they bounce to the forged address
in the "From:" field, which
may be yours.
There
are also viruses, such as Klez and Sobig, which spoof
the sender's address. An infected computer sends out
infected messages and puts addresses in the "To:"
and "From:" fields that it finds
somewhere on the infected computer (the email addresses
it finds don't have to be in the contacts lists of the
email program, but could even be, for example, in a
stored document or cached web page). Again, if the "To:"
address doesn't work, the message bounces, but it bounces
back to the "From:" address,
which may be yours.
There
is unfortunately very little you can do about these
messages, because the only way to trace the spammer
or the infected computer is by investigating the full
headers of the original message sent (not the bounced
message), and only the receiver of the original message
can enable those headers. The receiver in many of these
"bounced email" cases is
the automatic mailer from the domain of the non-working
address that was in the "To:"
field. Normally, these automatic "bounced email"
messages do not contain the full headers of the original
message sent. You could try to contact the organization
whose automatic mailer sent you the bounce message and
ask for the full headers, but this takes a lot of effort
and isn't usually successful.
Our
Anti-spam filters however tries to filter such mails
and put them in Junk Mail folder but cannot be 100%
accurate. |
 |
Why
can't I send or receive email with large attachments?
|
| |
Maximum
message size of an email including all attachments is
15 megabytes. Mail messages larger
than that limit will be rejected.
Encoding
an attachment to fit within an email takes up more space
than the file would normally use on your computer. So,
with most files, you will only be able to send or receive
a file attachment 12 megabytes or less
in size. |
 |
What
is Webmail? |
| |
Xcluzive's
Hosting and E-mail packages come with web-based email
to enable you to access email anywhere in the world
via your browser. |
 |
Do
you keep any logs? |
| |
We
collect no logs or customer data beyond what is required
for performance tuning and security monitoring of our
servers. This data does not have any information, which
can identify a customer or customers' personal usage.
Any such data is analyzed only statistically, and is
destroyed soon thereafter. |
 |
What
is URL Forwarding? |
| |
If
you already have a web page set up on some other domain/URL
and you do not want web hosting for this domain you
can use URL forwarding (or framing).
When
a person types www.yourdomain.com in a browser they
will be "forwarded" to your website or its
sub folder. |
 |
When
I purchased my domain name I set up URL Forwarding and
I elected to use my own DNS. Will my website forward
to that URL that I specified? |
| |
No,
because you are using your own DNS we don't have access
to this DNS and can't make any changes to your forwarding
settings. If you want your domain name to forward to
an URL you must use our name servers or have your web
host set up URL forwarding for you on their webserver. |
 |
How
do I set up email forwarding? |
| |
Log
into your account and go to domain management and look
for the link that reads, 'email forwarding'. All that
you will now need to do is create an email address name
in the first field. You can receive email at this address
but you won't be able to send email with this address.
When
you set up this simple email forwarding service you
can only have email forwarded to another email address
that already exists like
This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
You can reply
to the email any way you want but you can't reply to
the email and make it come from
This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
unless
you purchase a email only hosting account. |
 |
How
long does it take for the DNS to update? |
| |
Allow
48 hours for the DNS to update. If after this 48 hours
your domain name isn't functioning the way you would
like it to please make sure you've read our help and
then generate a support ticket from your control panel. |
 |
Is
it possible to have the title and metatags of the target
page to be available on the page accessible through
URL redirection (forwarding or framing), while at the
same time my domain is shown in the address bar ? |
| |
Our
service does not allow the META tags or the title of
the target page to be shown. Your URL however with URL
FRAMING will be visible in the address bar. |
 |
I
set up the simple email forwarding but when I send a
test email it is returned, why? |
| |
If
you have only set up this type of email forwarding within
the last 3 days it is being retuned to you because the
DNS hasn?t propagated yet. Please allow about 5 days
for this forwarding to start working. If this is too
long of a wait and you want to be able to send emails
from your domain name then we suggest the inexpensive
email hosting. |
 |
How
long will it be before I can see my changes take effect?
|
| |
Allow
up to 48 hours for your changes to take effect. Some
webservers/ISP's will "cache" your web site
and keep showing the old settings until they update
their cache. This has nothing to do with our services
and is out of our control. |
 |
Why
do the name servers on my domain name keep defaulting
to the your server? |
| |
Your
DNS would only revert to ours if you used some type
of our mail forwarding features, url forwarding/framing,
cnames, address forwarding, and mx forwarding after
settings your name up to correctly use your own DNS.
Once you use your own DNS you must make these changes
with your web host and not our as this will cause your
name/s to use our dns again. |
 |
Will
my website be submitted to search engines if I use URL
Forwarding or Framing? |
| |
Your
domain name won't be submitted to a search engines because
search engines do not index forwarded domains.
If
you need your site submitted to search engines you can
purchase web hosting at our site which will give you
a very professional looking web presence, something
that you can't get with free web sites. |
 |
Can
I forward to a domain name that is forwarding to another
URL/website? |
| |
You
can forward to any domain name as long as the domain
name you are forwarding to does exist. If that domain
name isn't set up correctly your domain name will also
not work properly.
Sometimes
certain web hosts don't allow forwarding to a domain
name on their servers and will block all requests. If
you set up your forwarding and it isn't working this
could be the reason but usually this happens because
you haven't set up forwarding properly. |
 |
Will
there be an extra charge if I want people to type in
my domain name but have them forwarded to my free webpage/s
(geocities.com angelfire.com)? |
| |
When
you pay for the registration of your domain name through
us you receive URL Forwarding and URL Framing free of
charge. We never show any banners or have any pop-ups
on your site to promote our service. |
 |
If
I click on a link on my web site I see that the domain
name changes to the actual URL where my page is, why?
|
| |
URL
Framing doesn't cloak (or hide) the domain name for
the subdirectories on a web site. It's meant to only
hide the main web page.
If
you still want to use it, make sure that you do not
use target = "_parent" or target = "_top"
in the links of the pages where the domain is being
forwarded to. |
 |
What
is the wrong way to set up URL Forwarding or Framing?
|
| |
The
most common error people make is they set forwarding
up to forward to the same domain name that they are
setting forwarding for. If you don't understand that
statement it is because it was "looping" and
that is the same thing that anyone's browser would do
when they tried to access your website. You can't set
yourdomain.com to forward to yourdomain.com. You also
can't set yourdomain.com to forward to yourdomain.net
AND THEN set yourdomain.net to forward to yourdomain.com.
That will cause the same problem and your web site will
never show up in a web browser. You must only use "www"
and "@" in the "host" fields and
nothing else for forwarding/framing!!! DO NOT USE www.yourdomain.com
in the host field as this will not work! |
 |
Do
I need to transfer my domain to use your dns service?
|
| |
As
of now we are offering our free DNS services only to
the domain registered with us. We do plan to extend
this service for all domains but there is not ETA for
that. |
 |
How
long is my free email forwarding valid? |
| |
We
will continue to provide free email forwarding for as
long as the domain name is on our servers. If a domain
name is transferred, service must be set up with the
new provider. |
 |
What
can I do to make sure that my URL forwarding only show
my domain name and the target URL is totally hidden?
|
| |
Web
hosting is only solution for this. You can go for our
basic web hosting plans which is low in cost and still
have almost all the features. |
 |
Can
I forward to an IP address? |
| |
You
can forward to an IP address but the web surfer will
be able to see this IP address. If you must forward
to an IP address you have to make it an URL like http://69.93.117.194.
You should use an A Record which will forward to the
IP address but keep your domain name in the browser
address bar provided you set it up correctly. |
 |
What
is MX Forwarding? |
| |
An
MX record controls which mail server deals with the
email sent to your domain and hostnames. With access
to the MX record for your domain you can ensure email
is routed to a mail server you are running or the mail
server of another company providing this service to
you. |
 |
If
I use my own DNS will I be able to use your services
to forward email? |
| |
Since
you aren't using our DNS we don't have access to this
record and won't be able to provide you with this service.
If you want to use our email forwarding service you
can set up A Record forwarding and use our DNS. |
 |
How
long will it be before I can see my changes? |
| |
Allow
48hours for external networks to update. It is important
to remember that information about your domain's web
features may be retained by other networks across the
Internet for a period longer then 48 hours. We do not
have any control over this. |
 |
What
does DNS stand for and what does it mean? |
| |
DNS
stands for Domain Name System. The DNS is a record,
located at the registry, that converts IP addresses
from numbers into names, ie 207.182.136.162 to www.yourdomain.com.
This record tells a browser where your web site is located
and also tells mail servers where to route your mail
to. If the DNS isn't set up properly your domain name
won't work. |
 |
What
is Domain Parking? |
| |
Domain
parking lets you buy a domain and then have a 'coming
soon' page on it. This is not needed - if a domain is
not parked it will simply be iinaccessible to anyone.
We provide domain parking as free feature with every
domain name registration.
|
 |
How
long does it take for the server to forward an email
message? |
| |
Email
aliases are forwarded instantly. As soon as an email
message reaches our server addressed to you, it's immediately
redirected to the email address you specified in your
registration. |
 |
Can
I have a special MX record so a different mailserver
like everyone.net or my own Exchange server will handle
all mail for my domain? |
| |
Yes.
If you want your mail to be handled by any 3rd party,
just tell us the hostname and IP address of the server
that will handle your mail. We will list it as your
"MX" (mail exchange) record in your DNS (domain
name service) zonefile that we maintain for your domain.
So
instead of this MX record which would cause mail for
your domain to be handled by our mailservers we can
change it to cause all mail for anything @yourdomain
to be routed to the 3rd party's mailserver:
IN
MX 10 sitemail.everyone.net.
or
IN MX 10 mailrecv.bigmailbox.com.
This
only works when our nameservers are listed on your domain
name registration.
If
our nameservers are not listed on your domain registration,
then you will have to ask your DNS administrator to
make any of these settings for you. |
 |
What
are priority levels in MX settings? (Pref) |
| |

What
is URL Framing? |
| |
URL
Framing does the same thing as URL Forwarding but the
web surfer won't see the forwarded to domain name in
their browser.
If
you have a web page set up with a company like createasite.com
or geocities.com the "surfer" would see the
forwarded to URL if you were using URL Forwarding. If
you use URL Framing you can trick the "surfer"
into thinking that they haven't gone anywhere. Remember
that it is not a substitute for hosting, it can be easily
detected that the URL is being forwarded. |
 |
What
if the name servers that I was given by my web host
aren't registered, what do I do? |
| |
You
can create an A/Record. This will forward all traffic
to the IP address and the server will know what to do
with it provided you set it up correctly. |
 |
I
only have one DNS to use, what can I do? |
| |
you
can use that one registered DNS and set up your secondary
as ns2.xcluzivesolutions.com. BUT you still won't be
able to use any of our forwarding services (MX, Cname,
Address etc). This secondary DNS is required by our
system. |
